How does a heat pump work when it freezes?
A heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air, even in freezing weather. With air-to-air heat pumps, this is done using a fan that sucks air over a heat exchanger.
Why does a heat pump freeze?
During the winter months, humidity is usually high. When moist air flows through the outdoor unit and then comes into contact with the cold metal parts of the heat pump, the moisture can freeze on it.
Is it normal for a heat pump to freeze?
Yes, that is perfectly normal and you certainly do not have to worry. Daikin heat pumps all have an automatic defrost system. This detects ice formation on the outdoor unit and then defrosts it automatically. So you do not have to do anything yourself and there is also no need to contact an installer. During defrosting, the flow direction of the coolant is reversed, which releases heat and melts the ice.
